Much of what we know about the chalk beds – the extent of the beds, the chalk formations and the plants and animals inhabiting the reef – has been discovered through surveys by local divers.

It is possible to undertake scuba diving from the shore, although for dives further offshore boats are usually used.

However, scuba diving is an activity not to be undertaken lightly. It requires training and qualification, regular medical checks to maintain the qualification, and considerably more equipment and cost than snorkelling.
